1984 anti-Sikh riots hearing to begin daily Sept 11 onwards to fast track trial

The Hush Post: The 1984 anti-Sikh riots hearing will take place every day from September 11 onwards. This has been done in order to ensure that it puts the case in the fast track mode.

Jagdish Tytler, Sajjan Kumar and HKL Bhagat are the three Congress men who were accused of abetting crime against the Sikhs and according to some accounts they were even directly involved in the anti-Sikh riots.tytler

Eyewitnesses have testified how Sajjan Kumar provoked mobs to kill Sikhs in the aftermath of Indira Gandhi’s death. While, Bhagat died in 2005, the case against the remaining two Congress members still remains.

The official reports say that about 2,800 Sikhs were killed across India, including 2,100 in Delhi alone. Independent sources put the number of deaths at 8,000. The CBI, the main Indian investigative agency, believes that the violence was nothing but a pogrom with support from the Delhi police and some central-government officials.

Rajiv Gandhi who was sworn in as prime minister after his mother Indira Gandhi’s death said when asked about the riots: “When a big tree falls, the earth shakes.”

Noted lawyer, HS Phoolka is spearheading one of the longest legal battles in the history of independent India.
