It is surprising to know that no girl children were born in the last three months in 132 villages of Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand. A total of 216 children were born and all were boys.
Shocking sex ratio data has come up in the district. It raises a question on the Centre’s “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” scheme. District Magistrate, Dr Ashish Chauhan said, “The imbalance of sex-ratio has raised the possibility of sex-selective abortions or the killing of girl children. The situation is suspicious and has highlighted female foeticide. We have identified areas where the number of girl childbirth is zero or in single-digit numbers. We are monitoring these areas to find out what is affecting the ratio. A detailed survey and study will be conducted to identify the reason behind it “.
Further, he added,” We will take strict action against ASHA workers if the situation does not improve. Moreover, we will also take legal action against the family who will be found guilty. These 132 villages have been marked for vigilence.
Social worker, Kalpana Thakur alleged that zero girl child birth clearly indicated the prevalence of female foeticide. “No girl child was born for three months in these villages. So, it cannot be just a coincidence. Therefore, the administration needs to take strict actions to put an end to this.
Senior journalist Shiv Singh Thanval urged the government to take strict measures to end this practice.
