Finance minister Arun Jaitley is suffering from a rare type of cancer, according to media reports. Officially, he is on a 2-week leave to the US for his treatment.
According to The Wire, Jaitley is being treated for soft tissue cancer in his thigh, a type of tumour which can spread to other parts of the body quickly.
The 66-year-old BJP leader had undergone a bariatric surgery in 2014 due to severe diabetes. In 2018, he was admitted to New Delhi’s AIIMS in April with serious kidney ailment. The renal transplant was done in May.
Any fresh surgery, accompanied by chemotherapy, would be a strain on the kidneys, which are still in the process of being accepted by his body, say medical experts.
Rahul Gandhi’s tweet
“I’m upset to hear Arun Jaitley Ji is not well. We fight him on a daily basis for his ideas. However, I and the Congress party send him our love and best wishes for a speedy recovery. We are with you and your family 100% during this difficult period Mr Jaitley,” Congress President Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet.
Jaitley may not be able to present interim budget
He is unlikely to be back in New Delhi to present the government’s interim budget on February 1. This is the last budget of the Modi government before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Last year, when he was on leave for his kidney transplant, railways and coal minister Piyush Goyal had assumed interim charge of the finance ministry.
However, there is no confirmation on when Jaitley would return from the US. There are reports that he might be back in time for presenting his sixth union budget.
