A newly married woman from Assam allegedly gang-raped by her husband and his two friends as her family failed to pay dowry
The Hush Post: A newly married woman from Assam was allegedly gang-raped by her husband and his two friends just three days after their wedding. The man committed this crime as his wife’s family had not met their demand of dowry, NDTV reported on Tuesday.
The victim and the accused man had got married just three days before the crime was committed, the report said.
The incident was reported on April 17 from Karimganj in southern Assam. An FIR has been lodged against the husband who has been arrested and a manhunt has been started for the two friends who are stated to be absconding, the police reportedly said.
The incident came in the notice of police as the newly-married woman had been admitted in a local hospital in a serious condition.
In the FIR, lodged on April 22, the victim said her husband had demanded gold jewellery in dowry, which her family could not give so her husband and two of his friends raped her, the report said.
“This is absolutely shocking. In the last two months, we have documented at least 20 cases of sexual assault… the reasons are varied but the huge economic and social disparity in Assam is a major factor,” Miguel Das Queah, a rights activist from Guwahati was quoted as saying.
