The Hush Post: Ex-Prime Minister and senior BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been admitted to New Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Monday.

The former PM was hospitalised on the advice of doctors. At AIIMS, Vajpayee will be under the supervision of Dr Randeep Guleria, a pulmonologist and current director at AIIMS. Dr Guleria has served as personal physician to Vajpayee for over three decades.

93-year-old Vajpayee was the first head of government from outside the Congress party to serve a full five-year term, as a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). A Padma Vibhushan awardee, Vajpayee is also a recipient of India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, which was conferred on him in 2015 by the Narendra Modi government.

Born in 1924, former PM Vajpayee entered politics during the Quit India movement in 1942. He was also the first external affairs minister to deliver a speech in the UN Assembly in Hindi, a report said.

The BJP stalwart leader had been elected to the Lok Sabha from Lucknow in 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2004.

Atal Bihari was the 10th prime minister of India. His first term was for a mere 13 days in 1996 and then later from 1998 to 2004.

He was the first non-Congress PM to survive a full five years. At 93, he happens to be the oldest living PM of India. On 25 December 2014 the office of President of India announced the Bharat Ratna award, India’s highest civilian honour, to him.
