The Hush Post: In a bid to boost unity among members of the opposition, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi sent out dinner invites to leaders of opposition parties. The aim of the invite is to stitch a stable opposition to challenge the ruling government, sources say.
The primary objective is to construct a viable opposition to the Bharatiya Janta Party and hold it accountable for increasing instances of violence and hate crimes across the country. However, there is another, much bigger reason behind the invites. The Congress plans to form an effective alliance with like minded parties to pose a stiff challenge to the BJP and try and defeat it in the coming 2019 General Elections.
The opposition has decided to attack the government in the Parliament over a number of issues, ranging from the recent destruction of statues, to bank frauds and hate crimes.
“It would not only be a dinner but also showcase the strength of opposition parties who would like to come together to form a front against the misrule of BJP,” a senior Congress leader said.
It is believed that Mrs. Gandhi is keen to have all opposition leaders on board, including Mamta Bannerjee of the Trinamool Congress and MK Stalin of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. In what could be a major breakthrough for the opposition, TDP Chief N Chandrababu Naidu could also attend the dinner. It is important to note that the TDP is a key ally of the BJP, but is having serious differences over issues relating to Andhra Pradesh. The TDP accuses the BJP of backtracking on its promise of granting ‘special state’ status to Andhra Pradesh.
The second half of the Budget Session of the Parliament saw coordinated protests by TRS, TDP, SP, BSP, TMC, Left, DMK and others, and “there is good coordination between all opposition parties”, said TMC leader Derek O’Brien. The dinner will be hosted on March 13.
