The Hush post: Navjot Singh Sidhu being the Local Bodies Minister was not kept in the loop in the decision to appoint Amritsar’s mayor which happened amidst lots of drama on Tuesday, there are indications that a miffed Sidhu is likely to abstain from the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday to register his protest.
Apparently annoyed for not being invited for the Amritsar mayoral election, Sidhu had yesterday said he never goes anywhere uninvited “except the Golden Temple or Durgiana Temple”. Alongwith him, fifteen other Congress councillors had boycotted the election of their party colleague Karamjit Singh Rintu as the Amritsar mayor, prompting Punjab unit chief Sunil Jakhar to seek a report. They categorically said they stayed away from the function because Sidhu was not invited to programme.
If the fences are not mended, it could be another test for the party and Capt Amarinder Singh, after the removal of Rana Gurjit Singh as Cabinet Minister and Suresh Kumar as Chief Principal Secretary to CM. Sidhu remained inaccessible throughout the day on Tuesday, party sources said. Party sources however say that he was invited but he refused to be a part of the programme.
Meanwhile in Patiala, close aides of Capt Amarinder Singh’s wife Preneet Kaur. Sanjeev Bittu was named as Patiala mayor, Yoginder Singh Yogi made senior deputy mayor and Vinti Sanger as deputy mayor. Yogi a first-time councilor is a garment shop owner and will represent the Hindu face of the Congress, Yogi represents urban Sikhs and Sangar represents both women and Dalits. The Congress gave all top posts to commoners and have rewarded them for working for the party for years.
