The Hush Post: Two air passengers, one hailing from Ludhiana and the other from Jalandhar, were caught at the Chandigarh airport carrying 24-carat gold biscuits in their shoes.
The two boys, who are in are in their 20s, were coming from Sharjah and carrying about 3.86 kg gold, valued at Rs 1.2 crore. They had taken a flight from from Amritsar to Sharjah on August 31, but returned via Air India flight 188 to Chandigarh. Their names have been withheld, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials told mediapersons.
The duo was apprehended on secret information after they crossed the green channel without declaring the gold. The youths were arrested and will be produced in a Mohali court today.
Nearly 50 kg gold worth around Rs 15 crore has been seized at the Chandigarh airport since international operations began here in September 2016.
A smuggler is prosecuted only if the gold seizure is above Rs 1 crore. Otherwise, it is a bailable offence and smugglers face adjudication process at the zonal commissioner level.
