In a major relief, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) is planning to extend free parking facilities to its residents. The civic body intends to provide free parking facility to the commuters in case they spend less than 20 minutes in the parking lot.
A person who leaves the parking lot within 20 minutes won’t be charged any fees. Anyone who takes longer will have to shell out the money as per the prescribed tariffs. The entry to the parking lot will be noted electronically.
Chandigarh Municipal Corporation Commissioner KK Yadav made this disclosure during a meeting of Federation of Sector Welfare Association (FOSWAC) on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the FSOWAC representatives opposed any hike in the paid parking. They said people were being charged for even dropping or picking up someone after they entered the parking zone. Instead, they mooted that at least 15 minutes should be granted for the same, like it is done at airports.
KK Yadav said that that around 13 lakh vehicles in the Tricity required parking space in the markets hence, charging a nominal fee was not an option. He, however, assured that the base rate for parking will not be high.
