Lady Professor accuses GNDU VC of sexual harassment, Punjab govt orders probe

The Hush Post: A lady Professor at the Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amristar, has accused Vice-Chancellor Dr. Jaspal Singh Sandhu of sexual harassment. Acting on the complaint, the Punjab government has directed Police Commissioner SS Srivastava to inquire into the matter.

In her statement to the police, the woman professor has alleged that the VC made sexual advances towards her. The VC used to pass on vulgar comments, and once even made an indecent proposal to accompany him to a hill station, she alleged.

The lady professor also accused Dr. Sandhu of colluding with a University official and lodging false complaints against her after she rejected his advances. She claimed that since the allegations against her were not proved, she was removed from the post of the departmental head. She also alleged of being removed from various other positions as the Dean Faculty, Senate, Syndicate, Visual Arts etc.

The lady had earlier lodged a complaint with the then Dean (Academics), however, since no action was taken, she approached the sexual harassment committee of the University. As per her, the committee, too, refused to accept the complaint following which she sent her complaint to the Punjab Governor, state Chief Minister, Punjab DGP and the state and national women commissions. The CM office wrote to the Higher Education ministry on February 19, 2018 and directed and inquiry into the matter, reported Jagran.com.

Amritsar Police Commissioner SS Srivastava said that he has received the complaint from the Punjab government, via the DGP office, and the probe has been started. A senior woman police official has been deputed to investigate the matter, Jagran.com quoted him saying.

Meanwhile, denying allegations, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Jaspal Singh Sandhu said he has received no complaint in this regard.  The police haven’t approached me, he said.
