The Education Department in UT Chandigarh has strictly prohibited hike in fees in all the private schools beyond 8 per cent. The schools have been asked to act in accordance with the Punjab Regulation of Fee of unaided educational Institution Act 2016. The Act was extended to UT Chandigarh on April 13 by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The UT Education Department has officially shared the notice with the private unaided recognized schools. Besides sending the notice, the department has even uploaded the same on its website with an aim to let parents know about the Act. The school cannot demand any hidden cost from the parents. The Act prohibits school from taking any capitation fees. It also prohibits strict commercialisation in schools which can result in a fine of upto Rs 2 lakh.

However, the private schools seemed unhappy. A school head-cum-member, Independent Schools Association, said, “ We have already challenged the Act when it  was implemented in Punjab. Now that it has been extended to UT schools we will soon be dragging the UT administration to court”.
