The Hush Post: Punjab and Haryana High Court today put a stay on Panjab University’s office order which sought to reduce the pension of professors who had retired before year 2006. The January 16 order of PU also intended to recover the extra pension amount paid to these professors. Giving interim relief to the petitioners, Justice Jaspal Singh asked Panjab University to file a reply by March 6.
In two different petitions, a total of 119 petitioners had pleaded that their pension was fixed when they retired from the University before year 2006. After around 12 years, now PU has realised that it had fixed inflated amount as their pension, they said.
The office order requires the retired professors to deposit the extra pension they have received or it would be deducted from their future pension. The petitioners pleaded that in many cases the Supreme Court has decided that if wrongly inflated pension is fixed, it can’t be recovered.
