Raj Bala Malik of the Bharatiya Janta Party was elected as the new Mayor of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation on Friday.

Ravi Kant Sharma was elected as Senior Deputy Mayor defeated Sheela Phool Singh.

Malik, an advocate, defeated Congress nominee Gurbax Rawat. Raj Bala Malik polled 22 votes. On the other hand, Rawat got five votes, officials said.

In order to be elected as Mayor, a nominee needs 14 votes of municipal corporation councillors. At present, the BJP has the majority in the 27-member of the MC House with 20 councillors. Congress has five councillors.

The BJP”s ally Shiromani Akali Dal also has one councillor. Local MP Kirron Kher is an ex-officio member of the House. Malik was Mayor in 2012 as well.

Meanwhile, the voting for the election of senior deputy Mayor and deputy Mayor is still going on.
