Naxals attacked a BJP convoy in Chattisgarh’s Dantewada today, killing a BJP MLA and 4 policemen. The convoy of BJP leaders was moving in the are in connection with the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Dantewada BJP MLA Bheema Mandavi was travelling the last vehicle of the convoy which was hit by an IED blast. Four police personnel deployed in his security also died in the attack.
Naxals also opened fire after the blast. The incident reportedly took place at around 4pm.
Chattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has called for a high-level meeting soon after the incident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condemned the attack. Describing Bheem Mandavi a dedicated BJP worker the PM expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
Sources say Bheem Mandavi was returning to Nakulnar after addressing a poll meeting in Shyamgiri village of the Kuakonda Block. As his bullet-proof vehicle crossed over the IED, a blast took place, killing him and four of his security personnel.
Pertinently, the Naxals had carried out a similar attack at the same spot five years ago, killing a security jawan.
Bheem Mandavi was first elected as MLA from Dantewada in 2008. In 2013 he lost to Congress candidate Devati Karma. He again won the seat in 2018 and was the sole BJP MP from Bastar Lok Sabha segment. He was the deputy legislature party leader in the Assembly.
Dantewada falls in the Bastar Lok Sabha constituency, which will go to polls in the first phase on April 11.
