A policeman’s — an Assistant Sub Inspector’s hands was chopped off in a deadly attack and six other cops were injured when a group of people allegedly attacked these cops at Sanaur vegetable market in Patiala district of Punjab. The incident happened on Sunday.
The ‘Nihangs’ then fled to Gurdwara Khichri Sahib. The police upon reaching the place arrested seven accused.
One of them was injured in police firing and was being taken to a hospital for treatment, said KBS Sidhu, Special Chief Secretary, Punjab, in a tweet.
As per the Tribune report, out of the seven, five were involved in the attack on police officials.
They have been taken to the CIA (Crime Investigation Agency) office for interrogation.
Two of them refused to cooperate and shouted religious and anti-police slogans.
They said that they “feared no one” and were justified in their act of chopping off the hand of an on-duty ASI.
About 100 cops have been deployed to search the residential premises near the gurdwara for arms.
How did it happen
A group of ‘Nihangs’, armed with swords and iron rods, were travelling in a vehicle. They were asked to stop at a vegetable market by Mandi board officials.
“They were asked to show curfew passes. But they crashed the vehicle against the gate and barricades put up there,” Mandeep Singh Sidhu, SSP, Patiala reportedly said.
