A government school principal in Surendranagar district of Gujarat served a notice to a dalit teacher for drinking water from a pitcher “reserved” for upper caste colleagues.
The 46-year-old dalit teacher, Kanhaiya had filed an FIR against the discrimination. Two weeks later on Wednesday, he was transferred to another government school.
“The school principal allotted two pitchers- one for me as I belong to the Valmiki community and one for the other three teachers, who hail from Koli Patel and Darbar communities,” Baraiya reportedly said in the FIR.
He alleged that the principal Mansang Rathod gave him a notice on July 3 when he came to know that he was drinking water from the other pitcher. The notice read, “You are a teacher belonging to the Valmiki community. Do not drink water from (upper caste) teachers.”
Not only the principal, but the parents of the students also threatened him. They said that they did not want “untouchable” teacher for their wards.
According to the reports, Baraiya has been provided security with an armed cop accompanying him.
