All the five people in the 22 to 30 year age group had gone to clean a sewer in Moti Nagar of West Delhi
The Hush Post: In a tragic incident, five sewer men were choked to death after inhaling toxic fumes while cleaning a sewer. The incident occurred in Moti Nagar of West Delhi on Sunday afternoon.
The victims include Sarfaraz, Pankaj, Raja, Umesh and Vishal. They were in the age group of 22 to 30 years. While two of them died on the spot, remaining were declared dead on their arrival at the hospital, a report said.
The police said that around 3 pm, the staff at Capital Green-DLF apartments told the police about five labourers trapped in a sewer.
It is alleged that the contractor forced Umesh and Sarfaraz, working with the housekeeping department of the locality, to enter the sewer. Before them, three other labourers had gone inside but did not come out. The contractor had allegedly forced them to enter the sewer, the report said.
The police said that the contractor also did not provide safety equipment to the sewer men.
“This is not the first incident such incident has taken place in the city. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government is clearly responsible for this incident. They had promised that technologies will be used for the cleaning of sewer, but even after so many deaths, same old methods are being used. They are playing with the lives of the innocents,” Bharat Bhushan Madan, a BJP leader said.
Meanwhile, the Delhi government has ordered an inquiry into the incident and has sought a report in three days.
