The Hush Post: Eminent poet and lyricist Gopal Das Neeraj passed away in Delhi Thursday evening a prolonged illness. The Padmabhushan awardee breathed his last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) where he was shifted from an Agra hospital on Wednesday. He was admitted to the ICU ward of the Trauma Centre at AIIMS.

Neeraj was in Agra to visit his daughter Kundnika Sharma and had taken ill after breakfast on Tuesday. He had complained of chest pain and was admitted to a local hospital in Agra. He was put on ventilator there. The doctors had removed around 800 gms mucus from his lungs.

Born on January 4, 1925 in Purvali village of Etawah district in Uttar Pradesh, Neeraj was a famous poet who had penned down many superhit bollywood songs. His award winning songs include- Kaal ka pahiya ghume re bhaiya (Chanda Aur Bijli), Bas yahi apradh main baar baar karta hun (Pehchan) and Ae bhai, zara dekh ke chalo (Mera Naam Joker).

The 92-year-old was awarded the Padma Shri in 1991 and then in 2007 he was confrerred with the country’s third-highest civilian honour- the Padma Bhushan. He was also honoured with Yash Bharti by the Uttar Pradesh government. Besides, Neeraj has be awarded with the Filmfare award thrice.
