A 44-year old Delhi man has been again arrested three years after he was released from jail after serving 17-year-jail-term for murder. Hemchand, the suspect, was arrested in another attempt to murder case on Wednesday.
Earlier, Hemchand was arrested for murdering fashion designer Kunjam Budhiraja in 1999. He was convicted and sent to life in prison, however, he was released after 17 years.
His recent arrest is for a 2017 case. The police told that Hemchand then attacked a man in outer Delhi’s Mangolpuri.
The victim of this case was Aman Kumar, a local criminal who was Hemchand’s rival. However, Hemchand had started demanding ‘protection money’ from his previous victims soon after his jail term was over from Tihar jail, the police told.
Deputy Commissioner of police (crime) Ram Gopal Naik said that on the day of the crime, the victim and his friend Ravi was standing at an eatery in P-Block of Mangolpuri. Hemchand arrived and got into a heated argument with the duo. During the argument, Hemchand took out a knife and attacked Kumar giving him multiple stab wounds.
“Hemchand fled the crime scene before the police arrived. The injured man was admitted to a nearby hospital. A case of attempt of murder was registered at the Mangolpuri police station and the investigation was taken up,” said Naik.
After three years on Wednesday, DCP Naik told that a crime branch team received information that the accused would be at the Moti Bagh flyover in order to meet a friend. Accordingly, the team laid a trap and caught Hemchand at around 10 pm when he arrived at the given place.
During questioning, he revealed that he was involved in this attempt to murder case and has been frequently changing locations to avoid the arrest.
