A 34-year-old AIIMS doctor allegedly committed suicide by jumping off from the balcony of his house. The incident took place in South Delhi’s, Gautam Nagar on Tuesday night.
According to the police, the deceased, Manish Sharma, a senior resident doctor at the institute, jumped to death shortly after a fight with his wife Tripti Chaudhary. She is also a doctor at PGI Chandigarh.
“A native of Nagaur in Rajasthan, Sharma lived with two of his colleagues on the fourth floor in Gautam Nagar near Hauz Khas. He got married six months ago. His wife would frequently visit him in Delhi,” said Vijay Kumar, deputy commissioner of police.
“Their quarrels mostly revolved around checking each others’ mobile phones,” said DCP. On the day of the incident, the victim had a quarrel with his wife over some small issue. Also, Sharma was inebriated and had consumed many sleeping pills.
When they began fighting, Sharma’s roommates and neighbours stopped them. They separated them and convinced them to back off. But shortly after, the couple resumed their quarrel. At this point, Sharma allegedly turned extremely violent,” said the DCP.
Somehow, the woman was rescued by the neighbours. However, when Dr Sharma was alone in his apartment, he jumped off from the balcony of his apartment, the DCP said.
Dr Sharma was declared brought dead at the AIIMS Trauma Centre. “The post-mortem was conducted by a board of three doctors. The body was handed over to his family for his last rites,” said the police.
Further investigation is underway.
