The Patiala House Court in Delhi today issued fresh death warrants in the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case. According the new death warrants, the guilty 4 will be hanged to death on February 1 at 6:00 am in the morning.
The fresh development comes in the wake of the President dismissing the mercy petition of Mukesh Kumar, one of the convicts. Law provides for giving 14 days to the guilty for execution of the death sentence after the President quashes the mercy petition. Now, it’s clear that Mukesh Kumar will be executed on February 1.
In the meanwhile, another convict Pawan today moved the Supreme Court challenging the Delhi High Court order. The High Court had dismissed his plea in which he had claimed that he was a minor at the time of the incident.
Earlier, the Patiala House Court had issued death warrants against the four convicts for January 22.
Notably, any convict facing a capital punishment has three options to save himself. First is the Review petition, second is Curative petition and the final resort is a mercy petition with the President.
Amongst the four convicts in the Nirbhaya case Vinay Kumar’s review and curative petitions have been dismissed. His mercy petition is lying with the President. Another convict, Mukesh Kumar has exhausted all his options.
