The Supreme Court on Monday gave interim relief to former Union minister P Chidambaram from arrest. Chidambaram will not go to the Tihar jail and stay in CBI custody.

The Supreme Court asked Chidambaram to approach the concerned court for interim protection. The trial court will hear Chidambaram’s plea of interim bail on Monday itself. If trial court rejects his bail plea, his CBI custody will be extended till Thursday.
Congress leader and Chidambaram’s counsel Kapil Sibal argued for his house arrest on Monday. He said, “Justice has to be done. Why should he be sent to Tihar when he has challenged the CBI custody? All I want is house arrest at the moment. He will go back if this court orders against me.”

On Chidambaram’s police remand and issuance of non-bailable warrant, Sibal said, “He is a 74-year-old man, put him under house arrest, no prejudice will be caused to anyone”.

A bench of justices R Banumathi and A S Bopanna directed CBI to file its response on Chidambaram’s plea challenging the non-bailable warrant issued against him and the subsequent orders of the trial court remanding him in the CBI custody.

Chidambaram’s CBI custody is expiring today.
