A CBI court in Delhi today sent senior Congress leader P Chidambaram to 14 days judicial custody. The former finance minister will now be lodged in the Tihar jail till September 19. The Rouse Avenue Court has sent Chidambaram to judicial custody in the INX Media case.
P Chidmabaram was produced before Special Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar, who remanded him to judicial custody till September 19.
Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court rejected Chidambaram’s anticipatory bail plea. His two-day CBI custody expired on Thursday. He had sought anticipatory bail in the Enforcement Directorates’ case of money laundering.
Hours after the apex court order, another special court granted him and his son Karti anticipatory bail in the Aircel Maxis cases.
Arguing against the bail plea, the CBI said Chidambaram was “a powerful public person” and should not be set free. Chidambaram’s counsel, Kapil Sibal opposed the CBI saying there was no allegation that Chidambaram tried to influence or hamper probe.
“Why should I (P Chidambaram) be sent to judicial custody? The CBI has had the remand for 15 days. I can surrender and ED can take my custody. But I should not be sent to JC, it is basically humiliation”, Sibal said.
