Pulkit Maharaj whose real name is Pulkit Mishra used to pass himself off as the “spiritual guru” of PM Narendra Modi. But, Mishra has no relation to either the PM or the Union culture ministry, the police said. As per police, Pulkit Maharaj only operates a Kathak school from Ghaziabad’s Shalimar Garden, the report said.

DCP (Crime Branch) Joy Tirkey said that officials of Sitapur district in Uttar Pradesh discovered Pulkit’s fraud. “Mishra, his sister and his three followers had visited Sitapur on April 1 on a personal tour. They were to visit a few temples in the district. But before their visit, Mishra allegedly sent a fax to the district magistrate seeking a personal security officer and government accommodation,” Tirkey said.

Sitapur DM Sheetal Verma said they had received fax in the name of Mishra’s sister a day before their visit. “The fax allegedly introduced Mishra as the secretary of “sanskriti mantralaya”, but there is no such ministry. Moreover, Mishra’s details did not contain his batch number or other specific details,” DM Verma said.

After this, the officials got suspicious. But the administration provided security and accommodation to Mishra and his people, DM Verma said. “Mishra had also claimed to be the spiritual guru of the prime minister. It turned out that he had earlier sought favours in two other districts as well,” he said.

Pulkit Maharaj stayed in Sitapur for one day. After he left, officials conducted a background check to realise that he had tricked them. They subsequently alerted the Centre after which the Delhi Police lodged an FIR last month. An investigation revealed Pulkit Maharaj’s real identity and location. The police arrested him near his Kathak school in Ghaziabad, DCP Tirkey said.

The DCP said that Mishra would either pose as the secretary or the director of the Union ministry to seek favours. “We have him in custody for five days and will know about his modus operandi and other similar crimes in at least two other districts,” DCP Tirkey said.

The police have not yet decided whether to arrest his sister and other devotees who accompanied him on some trips.
