Former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee receives Bharat Ratna

Former President of India, Pranab Mukherjee today received the highest civilian award of the country, the Bharat Ratna, from the current President Ram Nath Kovind. The award ceremony was held at Rashtrapati Bhawan this evening which was attended by the top leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. When the names of the recipients were announced in January, Narendra Modi hailed Pranab Mukherjee as the “outstanding statesman of our times”.

Also, two others received the awards posthumously- singer Bhupen Hazarika and Nanaji Deshmukh, who was one of the founding members of Jan Sangh.

Pranab Mukherjee’s term as President ended in the year 2017. He has served one of the most senior leaders when the government was headed by Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and Manmohan Singh. He was considered one of the wisest men in Manmohan Singh’s cabinet who had a great understanding of Indian politics, and economic issues.

Also, current Prime Minister Narendra Modi had acknowledged him as a mentor. When the Bharat Ratna awardees list was recommended by the NDA government, PM Modi congratulated Pranab Mukherjee and tweeted, “Pranab Da is an outstanding statesman of our times. He has served the nation selflessly and tirelessly for decades, leaving a strong imprint on the nation’s growth trajectory. His wisdom and intellect have few parallels. Delighted that he has been conferred the Bharat Ratna.”
