The Hush Post: Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who was critical for some days has died. Vajpayee was on a life support system after his health deteriorated on Wednesday. He was declared dead at 5.05pm today.
“Former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee was admitted for the last 9 weeks at AIIMS. Unfortunately, his condition worsened over the last 24 hours. His condition was critical and he was on life support system,” Dr Aarti Vij said in a press release.
The health update came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the AIIMS this evening to inquire about the condition of the former Prime Minister.
PM Modi visited him in the hospital at around 7.15 pm yesterday and spent about 50 minutes. Today, he came twice to see the struggling former PM. This was his sixth visit to the former PM since he got admitted to the hospital on June 11 the last time around.
Vajpayee served as the 10th prime minister of India. Before this, he served as the foreign minister in the Morarji Desai government. He was elected to the Lok Sabha 10 times and twice to the Rajya Sabha.
Vajpayee’s first exposure to politics happened when in 1942 he and his elder brother Prem were arrested during the Quit India Movement.
It was none other than the then Prime Minister of India, Jawahar Lal Nehru who after hearing the oratorial skills of Vajpayee said that the future prime minister was in front of him. Between 1975 and 1977 he was arrested several times during the Emergency.
