A 26-year-old autorickshaw driver was stabbed to death for ‘over-charging’ Rs 80 extra fare at night. The incident took place on Sunday at Connaught Place, Delhi.
As per a report, four boys hired Jahangir Alam’s rickshaw from Delhi’s Khanpur to Connaught Place area on Sunday night at 11:30 pm.
As per the police, there was a dispute between the driver and the passengers over charges of a higher fare at night. On the way, the driver also carried an extra passenger, which led to a scuffle and subsequent stabbing.
A 20-year-old man has been arrested along with three teenagers. The deceased Jahangir Alam used to live alone in Joga Bai extension, Jamia Nagar. His family including his wife, children and mother, live in Malda in West Bengal.
The accused, a 20-year-old sanitation worker worked in one of the civic bodies. The three teenagers are students of class X and XI respectively, the officer added.
A senior police officer said, a patrolling police team spotted an injured Alam near a restaurant at KG Marg. He was then rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital but died during treatment.
The Tilak Marg Police Station was informed that a man, who had allegedly stabbed the auto driver, was arrested by the public at Balwant Rai Mehta Lane, the officer said. A blood-stained knife was also seized from the accused who was a resident of Dakshin Puri.
