The Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to downgrade the security cover of the Gandhi family, said media reports. Now the Gandhi family- Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi will have the Z+ category security cover instead of the SPG (Special Protection Group).

With this, it is only Prime Minister Narendra Modi who will now have the SPG cover- the highest in the country.

Sources said security of the Gandhi family won’t be compromised and it will be provided with the Z+ security cover. Trained CRPF commandos will take charge of the security of the Gandhis.

According to media reports, the security cover is reviewed as a periodical and professional exercise, based on the threat perception. The decision was taken recently after assessing threat inputs from all agencies. Security agencies have found no direct threat to the Gandhi family in the recent past.

The elite security service SPG is responsible for the protection of the Prime Minister and their family members and former Prime Ministers and their family members depending on the threat level.

In 1991 after Rajiv Gandhi Murder it was decided to give SPG to former Prime Ministers also.

Notably, security cover of all Ex PMs reviewed time to time and downgraded whenever required.

Recently, the security cover of former prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh was also downgraded from SPG to Z+.  Former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee was protected by an SPG cover until his death in 2018.
