Former defence minister George Fernandes died today morning in Delhi.
He was 88 years old. He was the former Union Minister of Defence in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.
He had been suffering from swine flu for the last few days. A veteran Parliamentarian Fernandes was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1967. He served several times as a Union Cabinet Minister, and held key portfolios such as communications, industry, and railways and defence.
He was arrested during the Emergency. George Fernandes was the industries minister in the first non-Congress government that came to power after the Janata Party defeated Indira Gandhi.
