The Hush Post: A group of unruly ‘kanwariyas’ vandalised a car, broke open the doors of an i10 car, shattered the window panes with rods and overturned it in west Delhi’s Moti Nagar area. The car, reportedly driven by the daughter of a police officer, had brushed past one of them on Tuesday evening. The whole incident was caught on camera.
The enraged group of kanwariyas broke the windshield of the car with rods and turned the vehicle upside down. The whole incident led to a massive traffic jam. People merely remained onlookers and even when he police reached the spot, they continued with the hooliganism . The police too dealt very leniently with them.
The police received a phone call about kanwariyas indulging in violence near Moti Nagar metro station at about 5.30 pm.
The woman’s car had accidently brushed past one of the kanwariyas and soon many others joined him in an argument with her. As things deteriorated, the woman and her friend left the car on the road and ran for safety. Police said the woman refused to file a case with regard to the incident. However, taking congnisance of the incident, the police have registered a case under relevant sections.
‘Kanwariyas’ from across North India especially Uttar Pradesh and Bihar undergo an annual pilgrimage during ‘Sawaan’, which means the monsoon or rainy season, to Haridwar, Gaumukh, Gangotri to collect water from Ganga. They carry the holy water to their local shrines and temples. The Traffic Police issues special instructions to general public to make way for the kanwariyas keeping in mind their religious sentiments.
