A 25-year-old man allegedly set himself ablaze in an auto rickshaw, injuring two of his co-passengers. The reason: He was upset with his girlfriend. The incident took place in Jyoti Nagar area of Northeast Delhi on Sunday night.
The man identified as Shivam, a resident of Loni, Ghaziabad carried the petrol in a water bottle and a lighter with him. He poured the petrol on himself and set himself ablaze before anyone in the auto could react. His cousin Arjun (24) and co-passenger Bhagwan Singh (60) also sustained burns. While Shivam has received 80 per cent burn injuries, Anuj 40 per cent and Bhagwan Singh received 20 per cent burn injuries.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast) Atul Thakur said the incident took place at around 9 pm at flyover near Loni intersection in Gokulpuri. After receiving information about a person burning, Jyoti Nagar police reached the location. On reaching the spot, they found three persons had sustained burns. All of them were rushed to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital for treatment. However, the auto driver had a narrow escape as he left the auto and fled from the spot.
Initial investigations revealed that just before the incident, Shivam was speaking to a Kolkata-based woman. While talking to her, he set himself on fire after spilling petrol, Thakur said.
A case has been registered. An investigation is underway to ascertain the reason behind Shivam’s attempted suicide, the police said.
