The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson has confirmed that one Indian Air Force pilot is missing in action.
However, it is yet to be confirmed whether the pilot missing is Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman.
The incident happened when an F-16 fighter plane was brought down and while in action a MIG-21 airplane was lost and the pilot is missing.
Meanwhile, Pakistan has claimed that they have an Indian pilot in their custody. Pakistan has paraded Wing Commander Abhinandan and his video has been displayed on Twitter and on Facebook.
Earlier in the day, two Pakistani air jets violated the Indian air space near Nowshera today morning and on being fired upon immediately by Indian troops and after running into an IAF patrol they returned to Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.
This comes a day after Indian Air Force destroyed the Jaish terror camps in Balakot in Pakistan on Tuesday.
Who is Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman: Wing Commander Abhinandan is an Indian Air Force fighter pilot captured by Pakistani forces, according to a video put out by Pakistani social media. Wing Commander Abhinandan allegedly took off in a MiG 21 Bison jet on Wednesday, the ANI reported.
In the video, a blind-folded moustachioed man in pilot overalls can be seen identifying himself and giving out his service number which is the due protocol for captured officers during conflicts. The blindfolded man can be seen bleeding from a possible head injury requesting his captors to identify themselves. This is a claim made by the Pakistani authorities and reaction from India is awaited.
