Fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi has been arrested. This has been confirmed by the Enforcement Directorate as per the media reports. This has also been confirmed by the Scotland Yard police. Nirav Modi will be shortly produced in the Westminster court. The time of his production will be 3:30 pm today.
Modi will probably get bail today itself from the court. After this, the process of getting him extradited will pick pace. However, the extradition process will go with the same pace as that of fugitive business tycoon Vijay Mallya. Vijay Mallya’s extradition was approved recently and is now pending with UK’s Home Office. However, it will still take a long time before he can be extradited to India.
Nirav Modi is wanted for loan fraud in India to the tune of Rs 13,000 crore. He was earlier spotted by the media in London twice this month, a day after the UK put out an arrest warrant for him. This time too, Nirav Modi didn’t progress beyond his two-word response: “No comments”.
Modi lives in his luxurious apartment not very far from the Westminster court. He was sighted at what appeared to be an eatery at his Centre Point home in an upscale part of London.
