A special CBI court in Delhi has sent former finance minister P Chidambaram to four-day CBI custody in the INX media corruption case. The CBI had sought Chidambaram’s custody for five days saying there is a need to unearth a “larger conspiracy”. The senior Congress leader will be in CBI custody till August 26.

Earlier in the day, Special Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar heard the arguments of CBI and Chidambaram’s counsel for over one-and-a half-hour. He then reserved the judgment for 30 minutes.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appeared for the CBI and said Chidambaram was not cooperating with the probe agency and was evasive in his answers. “It is a serious case involving intelligent people and we will fail in our duty if we don’t get to the root of the case,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chidambaram’s lawyers – Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi – opposed the CBI plea on the ground that all the other accused, including his son Karti, have already been granted bail in the case.

The two senior lawyers argued that Chidambaram was asked 12 questions and he had already answered six of them previously. Investigators don’t know what to ask and they don’t have questions ready with them, Sibal told the court.

The CBI arrested P Chidambaram Wednesday night from his residence in connection with INX media corruption case amid high drama.
