Names of several awardees who will be conferred with the Padma Shri Award on Sunday have been announced by the government.
Those who will be honoured at Padma Awards 2020 are Jagdish Lal Ahuja, Javed Ahmed Tak, Satyanayana Mundayoor, S Ramakrishna and Yogi Aeron. Jagdish Lal Ahuja is also known as ‘Langar Baba.’
Ahuja is being awarded for “selflessly organising langars for 500 plus poor patients daily. He has been doing this for over two decades”.
He also provides patients other support from financial assistance to blankets and clothes. Ahuja is a self-made billionaire who came to India empty-handed during the partition. He sold off properties worth crores to fuel his mission and continues to serve undeterred even by stomach cancer.
Another Padma awardee, Mohammed Sharif aka Chacha Sharif, is a “bicycle mechanic. He has been performing the last rites of thousands of unclaimed dead bodies for the last 25 years”.
Chacha Sharif has performed the last rites of more than 25,000 unclaimed bodies in and around Faizabad. He has never differentiated on the basis of religion. Chacha Sharif performs last rites in accordance with the person”s religious practices- cremating Hindus and burying Muslims.
The Padma Shri Awards are the highest civilian awards of the country after the Bharat Ratna. The final list of names of the awardees is announced by the government on January 25, on the eve of Republic Day.
