The Parliament canteen may soon go veg-only. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla might take a decision to replace IRCTC as the present caterer. Reports suggest that Haldiram or Bikanerwala may replace IRCTC.

Since Haldiram and Bikanerwala provide only vegetarian food, meat dishes will go off the shelves from the five canteens in the Parliament. News 18 reported that a third government company is also in the race to replace IRCTC.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla m will decide over the matter in the absence of a food committee. However, News 18 said quoting sources that it will likely come down to between Haldiram and Bikanerwala.

If the Parliament canteen’s menu becomes wholly vegetarian, it could stir up a controversy. Items like biryani, chicken cutlets and fish and chips are some of the most preferred in the canteen.

The Parliament administration has received complaints against the IRCTC over the last few months over the quality of food served in the canteen. Parliamentarians and staff had also questioned the subsidies offered by IRCTC leading to the demand for a new caterer.

It is reported that a final decision on replacing the caterer could be made during a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee of the Parliament during the upcoming Budget Session.

Notably, the MPs had agreed to give up their subsidy at Parliament canteens after Speaker Om Birla moved a proposal.
