In a major boost to the Congress in Gujarat, Patidar leader Hardik Patel will likely join the party on March 12. Hardik Patel is slated to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from the Jamnagar constituency.
Patel had led the agitation demanding reservation for the Patidar community in Gujarat. He will joint the Congress in the presence of party chief Rahul Gandhi, said media reports.
BJPs Poonamben Maadam is the current MP from Jamnagar. Political experts say that Hardik has a strong chance to pull it off in this constituency which has a sizeable population of Patels, Muslim and Dalits.
Incidentally, the Congress has its Working Committee (CWC) meeting in Ahemadabad on March 12. The top party leaders will subsequently address a party rally there. Hardik Patel joins the Congress fold the same day.
During the last Assembly polls, Congress had given a strong fight to the BJP in the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Hoping to cash in on the buoying outcome, the Congress now is focusing extensively on Gujarat.
Gujarat has 26 Lok Sabha seats and the BJP had won all of them in 2014.
