The Supreme Court on Friday quashed FIR against BJP MP Anurag Thakur, former Himachal Pradesh chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal and others. The case related to alleged irregularities in granting land on lease for construction of the Dharamshala cricket stadium.
A Bench of Justice A K Sikri, Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice Ajay Rastogi said, “We allow the appeal.” With this ruling, the court quashed the FIR
Thakur, Dhumal and Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association had challenged the high court order of April 25, 2014. However, the Himachal Pradesh High Court had refused to quash the FIR and stay the criminal trial pending before the special judge, Dharamshala. The police registered a cheating and criminal conspiracy case, and under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Thakur is a BJP MP from Hamirpur. Then the HPCA president, he had contended in the apex court that the case was actually a civil dispute. The counsel made the argument that Virbhadra Singh-led Congress government had made it a criminal case for political reasons.
The Dharamsala office of the Vigilance Bureau had registered an FIR on August 1, 2013. The Congress government had assumed power in December 2012.
