Indian Army will now have a permanent commission for women who want to join the forces.

The Supreme Court has ruled in favour of permanent commission to women officers in Army. The orders came on Monday.

The SC criticised the Centre for not following Delhi High Court’s 2010 order.

It said the submissions of Centre against the Delhi HC order were based on “sex stereotypes”.

The Supreme Court has given three months time to the Centre to implement its order.

The court had recently said the government has to look at the matter “very differently”.

Earlier, the central government put forward a proposal as per which short-service commissioned women officers with up to 14 years of service would be considered for permanent commission. Women with more than 14 years of service would be permitted to serve up to 20 years. They would be permitted without consideration for permanent commission and then released subject to pensionary benefits. Women above 20 years of service would be released with pensionary benefits immediately upon the completion of the case in the Supreme Court.
