In a major judgment, the Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the Gujarat government to pay compensation or Rs. 50 lakhs to Bilkis Bano, the gangrape victim of the 2002 Gujarat riots.
The apex court also asked the state government to provide a job and an accommodation to Bano.
Rioters had gangraped Bilkis Bano during the Guajrat riots. The mob also killed seven of her family members. She was pregnant during the time of the incident.
A Bench comprising of Chief Justice of India, Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Sanjeev Khanna delivered the verdict.
In the meanwhile, the Gujarat government informed the court that it had taken action against the guilty officers in the case. The Bench was also told that all the benefits including pension etc. have been withheld.
Bilkis Bano had approached the court in March after she turned down the compensation amount of Rs. 5 lakh offered by the State of Gujarat.
Bano had submitted that the police officials who botched the investigation were yet to be punished despite conviction by Bombay High Court. The Supreme Court had upheld the conviction.
During the last hearing on March 29, the court had asked the Gujarat government to initiate disciplinary proceedings against the convict police officers including an IPS officer.
