Atal Bihari Vajpayee to be cremated at Smriti Sthal, traffic restrictions in Delhi

The Hush Post: Delhi traffic police has asked commuters to avoid central Delhi like areas around Krishna Menon Marg, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg and Rajghat which would be closed in phases for traffic movement on Friday. This is in view of the funeral procession of late former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the movement of VIPs in the area to pay homage to the departed soul. Mourners in large numbers are expected reach Delhi to pay their last respects.

The traffic police said traffic movement would be restricted from 8 am on the following roads:

Krishna Menon Marg

Tughlaq Road

Akbar Road

Tees January Marg, Janpath (from Hotel Claridges to Windsor Place), Mansingh Road

C-Hexagon from Shahjahan Road to Tilak Marg

Rajpath (from Mansingh Road to C-Hexagon)

Ashoka Road (from Windsor Place to C-Hexagon)

Kasturba Gandhi Marg (from Feroz Shah Road to C-Hexagon)

Copernicus Marg (from Mandi House to C-Hexagon)

Shahjahan Road

Zakir Hussain Marg

Tilak Marg (from C-Hexagon to Tilak Bridge)

Bhagwan Dass Road

Sikandra Road

Mathura Road

Sunehri Bagh Road

lower Ring Road from ISBT Kashmere Gate towards Shantivan

IP Flyover towards Rajghat

Alternative routes suggested by the traffic police

Minto Road-Bhavbhuti Marg-Ajmeri Gate-Shradhanand Marg-Lahori Gate Chowk-Naya Bazar-Peeli Kothi-SP Mukherjee Marg to commute between north Delhi and Connaught Place.

 

Vajpayee’s body was taken to his residence at 6A-Krishna Menon Marg from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Thursday. Area around AIIMS had already been closed the entire day on Thursday. Vajpayee’s body will be kept at his residence till Friday morning, from where it will be taken to the BJP headquarters on Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg around 1pm. The funeral is scheduled to take place at 4 pm at Rashtriya Smriti Sthal.

Smriti Sthal is a common memorial site, located between Jawaharlal Nehru’s memorial Shanti Van and Lal Bahadur Shastri’s memorial Vijay Ghat, proposed following concerns over shrinking land resources in the capital. Vajpayee’s last rites will be performed on an elevated platform which is surrounded by greenery.

Former prime minister I K Gujral was also cremated at the Smriti Sthal on the banks of the Yamuna in December 2012.
