There is no word to express the feelings of the parents whose son is a true soldier and is coming back home from an enemy country, Pakistan here.
The parents of IAF pilot Abhinandan Varthaman witnessed the heartfelt patriotic warmth and standing ovation when their Chennai-Delhi flight came to a stop at the tarmac.
There was no rush or scramble to get bags from the overhead bins and towards the exit because all passengers were ensuring that the couple gets off first.
Air Marshal S Varthaman (retd) and Shobha Varthaman had come to Delhi on their way to Amritsar to bring their son home.
Abhinandan was captured by Pakistan on Wednesday. The Pakistani Government had announced his release on Friday.
The passengers on the flight shared the photos and videos on social media platforms in which the couple can be seen acknowledging the clapping, cheers and thankyous with nods.
The plane landed at the Delhi airport about an hour after midnight.
Abhinandan’s family has served the Indian Air Force for generations since the Second World War.
Air Marshal S Varthaman said in a message, “Abhi is alive, not injured, sound in mind, just look at the way he talked so bravely… a true soldier…. We are so proud of him.”
Air Marshal S Varthaman holds several honours including a Param Vishisht Seva Medal.
Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman was captured by Pakistani Army after his jet crashed in an air duel with Pakistani F-16. He shot down the plane before his own went down, forcing him to eject. He fell into Pakistani territory.
