The Hush Post: Stars might fade away, but the iconic characters they play on TV or cinema get etched in public memory and stay forever. One such TV serial by Ramanand Sagar ‘Ramayana’ became a cult classic and had taken the television world by a storm in the 80s and the Indian masses got glued to their television sets as never before.
The actress Dipika Chikhlia Topiwala who played goddess Sita in Ramanand Sagar’s TV series Ramayan in the 1980s recently met another ‘Sita’ Debina Bannerjee who played the role of Sita in a remake of Ramayana by Sagar Arts in 2008, met at the screening of ‘Chalo Jeete Hain’ a movie inspired by the childhood of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the city’s High Street Phoenix.
Debina took to Instagram to share images with Dipika. She wrote: “When #Sita meets Sita ……..How I savoured this moment of meeting you @dipikkatopiwala my first work #ramayana was on the foundation of seeing your DVDs , understanding, forming knowledge. #legend……………. lots of looooove (sic).”
Ramayan was aired on Doordarshan between 25 January, 1986 and 31 July, 1988. Almost thirty years later, Debina played the same character and was paired opposite Gurmeet Choudhary. Interestingly, Debina found love on the sets of Ramayan and is married to Gurmeet.
In the TV serial Ramayana, there were other famous characters like Arun Govil who had played Lord Rama, Dara Singh who played Hanuman and Lalita Pawar who played Manthra. Deepika is married to Shingar cosmetic brand owner Mumbai-based businessman Hemant Topiwala. She has also been an MP from Gujarat’s Baroda constituency. She has now returned to acting and will soon be seen in Hindi film, Gaalib.
