Apex court pulls up Hyderabad Police for registering against young actress who had shot to limelight earlier this year for her wink
The Hush Post: Everybody still remembers Priya Prakash Varrier, a young Malayalam actress, who had become nationwide sensation overnight with her seductive wink in a song from an upcoming movie. But that had not gone well with some of the publicity-seekers who had lodged a complaint against the young actress and the Hyderabad Police had registered a case based on the complaint from a group of young men.
The Malayalam actress has got a huge reprieve as the Supreme Court cancelled a police case against her over a song in her upcoming movie “Oru Adaar Love”, a report said.
Priya Prakash Varrier had become wildly famous for her wink. She was accused by complainants Muqeeth Khan and Zaheer Uddin Ali Khan of hurting sentiment with her wink in a popular song from the movie, the report said.
“Somebody in a film sings a song and you have no other job but to file a case,” Supreme Court Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra said pulling up the complainant.
The Hyderabad Police had filed a case following the complaint against Priya Prakash Varrier, listing the charge of “deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings.”
The apex court ruled that these charges did not apply to the 18-year-old actress and cancelled the case. The top court also cancelled the FIR against the director and producer of the movie, the report said.
The young actress had petitioned the top court saying the song praises the love between the Prophet Mohammed and his first wife Khadeeja and “has been misunderstood by the complainants”. She had also said it was a traditional song sung by Muslims in north Kerala’s Malabar region.
When the complainant argued in Supreme Court that winking not permitted in Islam, the Chief Justice said: “It’s only a song!”
In February, the Supreme Court had put on hold all police cases against her.
Priya Prakash Varrier had shot to limelight overnight in February this year when the song showing her winking and smiling became a rage on the Internet and charmed the nation, the report said.
