A fortune-teller in Punjab, very well-known known in the region, has become the talk of the town. He has surrendered undisclosed income amounting to Rs 1.30 crore to the Income-Tax Department.

The Department had conducted a survey on Wednesday and asked him to disclose his source of income.  Parmeet Sachdev, Principal commissioner (Patiala and Ludhiana 3) had ordered an I-T team to conduct the survey in his premises. A posse of about 10 officials of the Income Tax department accompanied by police officials reached the premises.

Famously known as ‘Pandit ji’, he belongs to Sunam, near Patiala.  The survey was conducted in such a manner that his clients are not able to gauge the real operation going on. The motive was to know the footfalls and the amount of money collected in a day. The astrologer’s financial records and other documents were checked.

His clientele included politicians, bureaucrats, doctors, and the rich and the famous. A meeting with him was only possible on advance booking. His rate card mentions the rate of meeting as minimum Rs 500 and maximum Rs 1100 according to the day. ‘Pundit ji’ also had the provision for a ‘tatkal’ service for NRI/ VIP and clients in a hurry. The fees for the tatkal service was Rs 2,500.
