The Hush Post: Fuelled by films like “Veere Di Wedding” and “Lust Stories”, the sale of adult toys is increasing in Gujarat.

A report said that depicting scenes of acts of self-pleasuring by the female protagonists seem to have fuelled the curiosity of the people on the internet and it has resulted in increase of sale of adult toys by about 50 per cent in Gujarat after the two films were released recently.

Approximately 3,000 units of sex toys are sold in Gujarat monthly, the estimates by web portals selling such products point out. These web portals sell sexual wellness products. The report said that Gujarat is the fourth largest market for sex toys and it accounts for nearly 10 per cent of pan-India sales by these portals. In the last month, the traffic on these portals saw close to 20 per cent spike from across Gujarat.

“As far as Gujarat is concerned, the traffic on our website grew by more than 350 per cent from quite a few major cities as Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Vadodara, Surat, Jamnagar, Anand, and Valsad. After the movie and the web series released, provocative scenes led to a spike in searches and traffic out of curiosity to know about whether these products are available,” Samir Saraiyya, CEO, was quoted as saying in the report.

Increasing clicks on such portals are also recorded from small towns like Vapi and Bhuj. It is evident from the fact that the leading portals in the sexual wellness industry in India are recording 100 per cent growth in sales and have optimistic growth projections of 100 per cent or more for the financial year 2018-2019. The growth for Gujarat is also the same, multiplying year after year, the report said.

Surprisingly, the demand from women buyers is also growing.

“Women customers have a huge say in this market and are becoming more demanding and more open to exploring their sexuality. Depictions in web series and films including “Lust Stories”, “Lipstick under my Burkha”, and “Sacred Games” made this vocal. We have seen a traffic spike in the season of more than 15% from Gujarat,” Kaamastra CEO Rahber Nazir was quoted as saying in the report.

Such products are also available at web portal www.thatspersonal.com.

“The urge to explore sexual boundaries and experiment always existed. Internet and e-commerce majors selling sexual wellness products have allowed people to explore themselves and their partners. Today people are more open, not just to buying such products for themselves but also gifting them to their friends and partners,” a sexologist Dr Paras Shah was quoted as saying.

As per experts, such a trend reflects changing times. “Film attempting to depict a woman’s sexual desire reflect today’s times when many women are assertive about their sexual preferences and desires,” a sociology professor Gaurang Jani was quoted as saying.
