In a strange show of solidarity, four women committed suicide by jumping into the Narmada canal in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district. The four were close friends and left behind a suicide note before committing suicide.
According to media reports, one of the women, Shilpa Thakore was suffering from a heart ailment. Shilpa’s friends- Minaxi Thakore, Jamuna Thakore and Hakiben Thakore were pained to see her condition. Shilpa decided to commit suicide following which her three friends also decided to end their lives. Barring Hakiben, all the others were married.
Aged between 22 and 25, the women hailed from Dethli village of Vaav taluka in Banaskantha district. According to the locals, they walked up to the Narmada canal which is a few kilometers away from the village.
Before jumping into the canal, they wrote down a suicide note explaining their act. They also left behind their footwear. The villagers were alerted by a passer-by who also informed the police and rescue workers.
The police have recovered the suicide note from the bank of the canal. Vaav police station officer confirmed that the women jointly took the extreme step. The matter is being investigated and the police is recording the statements of the families, he said.
