Vinesh Phogat wins gold for India in 50 kg women’s wrestling


The Hush Post: On the second day of the 18th edition of the Asian Games 2018 wrestler Vinesh Phogat won Gold in Women’s Freestyle 50 kg wrestling. This was India’s second gold at this Asiad, beating Japan’s Yuki Irie 6-2.

Earlier, it was grappler Bajrang Punia, 2014 defending champion,  who bagged for India its first gold medal in the 65 kg Men’s Freestyle event on Day 1 on Sunday.  He beat Japan’s Daichi Takatani 11-8 in the final round. Earlier, shooters Apurvi Chandela and Ravi Kumar opened the account for India by clinching the bronze medal in the 10m Air Rifle Mixed team event. In the 2014 Asian Games, India had concluded the previous edition at the eighth rank with a tally of 57 medals (11 Gold, 9 Silver, 37 Bronze), India’s third highest medals tally ever at the Asiad. China had topped the medals table with a staggering tally of 345 medals (151 gold, 109 silver, 85 Bronze), followed by South Korea with 228 medals (79 gold, 70 silver, 79 bronze) and Japan at third with 200 medals (47 gold, 77 silver, 76 bronze).
