From now onwards, girls too would be allowed admission into Sainik Schools across the country. In a first of its kind, the Defence Ministry has allowed admission of girls into Sainik Schools. These schools are feeder institutions to the Indian Army. They offer military culture to the students to ripen them join the armed forces.
Dr Subhash Ramrao Bhamre, the Minister of State for Defence, confirmed this news on Thursday. He said infrastructure is being developed by the authorities to ensure that these schools start inducting girl students soon.
Addressing a gathering of principals of Sainik School at Sainik School Kunjpura, Karnal, Dr Bhamre said,“The central government has taken revolutionary decision to induct girls in all the Sainik Schools. It will open the doors of quality training, a historic step towards empowerment of girls,”. The two-day programme in Karnal was organised to focus on matters of policy and functioning of all Sainik Schools.
As per a report, if the required infrastructure and proper facilities for girls are set up, the upcoming session of 2019 will see admission of girl students as well.
For the first time, the centre has formally confirmed the entry of girls after the increased demand for girls’ admission in these schools. However, the number of seats for girls will be limited. Recently, in June, Mizoram’s Sainik School gave admission to six girls in Class VI. In April, Sainik School Lucknow inducted 15 girls in class 9.
Dr Bhamre said,“It is a testimony to the fact that the Sainik Schools are meeting their three-pronged agenda of opening access of quality public school education to children; serving as feeder-institutions to the NDA and removing regional imbalance in the officer-cadre ratio of the armed forces,”. The minister said the schools will admit girls regularly just like boys are being chosen annually with a selection process.
