Kumari Selja is the new Haryana Congress Chief, sources in the Congress party confirmed on Wednesday. Kumari Selja is a former union minister for women and child welfare. She takes it over from Ashok Tanwar.

The news comes days after the infighting in Haryana Congress unit between factions of Congress leaders Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Ashok Tanwar threatened to tear the party into two just before the state heads into elections.

Hooda, a Congress veteran and a former two time CM, had been threatening to break away from the party, forcing the party’s high command to step in. Assembly elections are due in the state soon. The term of the current assembly will come to end in October.
